19 Share Posts from the Blogger NavBar
Saturday, August 29, 2009 /

Yet more treats for Blogger's 10th birthday celebrations were released for us today!

An additional button in the Blogger Navbar now enables us to share our posts via Twitter, Facebook, Google Reader and by email:

When a reader clicks the "Share" link on your blog's home page, they can opt to share the URL of your blog by Twitter, Facebook or Google Reader. On item pages, the pop-up box includes the additional option to share by email:

When readers share your blog and posts, additional parameters are added to the URL which helps you track the syndication of these posts using Google Analytics in the format "?spref=nn" where the nn part is changed to fb for Facebook, tw for Twitter or gr for Google Reader.

For example:

  • http://buzz.blogger.com/2009/08/share-from-nav-bar.html?spref=tw (sharing the announcement post on Twitter)

  • http://www.bloggerbuster.com?spref=fb (sharing the Blogger Buster homepage on Facebook)

You can then search for URLs ending with these parameters when using Google Analytics to view details of how your posts have been shared.

Of course, this new feature is only available to those who have not chosen to hide the Blogger Navbar!

If your Blogger template does not display the Blogger Navbar and you would like to make it reappear in order to use this new feature, here is what you should do:

1. Go to Layout>Edit HTML in your Blogger dashboard.

2. Using your browser's search function, locate the following section of code:

#navbar-iframe {
height:0px;
visibility:hidden;
display:none;
}
This should be located within the <b:skin> or <style> section of your template.

Delete this section of code, then preview your template. If all is well, the Blogger Navbar will be visible again, enabling your readers to syndicate your posts with ease. Instructions to hide the Blogger Navbar can be found here.

What do you think of the new Navbar "Share" feature?

I admire the determination of the Blogger team to roll out so many new features for this platform in just a few short weeks! The addition of this sharing feature will be useful for many bloggers, though those of us who choose to hide the navbar for aesthetic purposes will need to adopt other methods of sharing our posts.

What do you think of this latest birthday gift? Will you find this useful? Is this enough to persuade you to display the navbar again (if you have currently chosen to hide it)?

Please feel free to leave your comments and opinions below.

To be honest, I don't feel that any of these features are very significant. I want things that were actually voted for.

Like pages, read more links etc etc.

How about better templates and NOT deleting gadgets on a template change?

Anyone who wanted to share a blog already used Blogger's own suggestion (ShareThis). Are they going to add more share options, or are we forever stuck with these? Anyone signed in via GFC already has access to all these shares and a lot more!

I don't get the big build up. Something significant please!!

@Anonymous - trust me, this is just the build-up to even better features :) I wish I could say more, but my hands are tied!

Here's what I can discuss:

- Pages: not sure about this, though I would not be surprised if this happens within the next 6 months or so. Many bloggers do want this feature, and for the most part we will get the features we most desire.

- Read more feature: I strongly suspect this is an update in progress, which will become available in the near future. Take a good look at the Posts gadget in a clean Blogger template and you'll see why.

- Better templates? Watch this space for a couple of months (at most, I hope!). Something very significant approaches!

- More GFC features? I believe so. I just discovered a great Popular Posts gadget which is based on GFC features. I believe this may be integrated into Blogger soon, perhaps as part of the birthday celebrations.

Hope this may make you feel more positive about these changes. Believe me, the Blogger team have been working hard, and the best new features are yet to come.

Do you mean the GFC recommendation gadget (that you just added)? That's the one I emailed you about last month. It's been there for a while.. I'm surprised more people aren't using it. It beats the reactions because you can get useful data out and present it to the reader.

You sort of need "Read more" posts to make it work (or at least make sense to the reader). Blogger will need to tweak their gadget model slightly to make it work in the correct position (under a post).

I hope they come up with a feature, that has better commenting system, with email field and more control over comments moderation.

Talking farely! I am not impressed by this!

This is not so usefull while someone is tweeting or sharing directly from Twitter and Facebook! Then why to do this...............

Deliver good content!

I will surely prefer the wibiya toolsbar over the blogger navbar. It is 1000 times better than the blogger navbar.

Yes, THIS would be the most necessarly feature, cause many people don't comment on blogger cause the handling is too complicated and time consuming...

It is tempting to enable the navbar now but for the colours. I wish it would automatically take its colours from the template.

I was hoping for pages too, and more comment management (e.g. editing by both blogger & commenter), but Blogger's pretty great as is and I'm sure they'll keep rolling out useful new features.

Just a quick question:

These more "substantial" updates (that are part of Blogger's birthday): how long till they arrive?

Thanks.

Blogger is playing catchup.. you have not mentioned a single feature that is NOT already available in other blogger tools.. and yet we are still waiting.. and waiting.

When will Blogger add some real revolutionary features?

I have blogger nav bar showing and this update isn't part of the nav bar (yet?) If blogger changes the widgets they need to give us choice of font color, my blog is becoming a patch work quilt of colors. And I don't like it, nor do I like tweaking html - the idea of blogger was to be modular.

I've hidden the nav bar until this is fixed, it's never been useful - hopefully when fixed I'll return it to it's place on the blog
